Allerthorpe Sprint Tri

5803117118_4a7c562a8e

Freebird Events first open water event in the 2011 season took place at Allerthorpe Lakeland Park Yesterday. Situated just 10 miles from York, the venue has proved to be very popular with many triathletes with 300 entering the race. The swim comprises of a single lap of the lake, before exiting the water to transition. The swim exit lends itself to an ideal viewing area for spectators with the Lincsquad press team getting some great shots. Following the swim, a fast, very scenic bike course awaits and finally the run comprises of an out and back 5km run on quiet country roads. (Left Clark celebrates with 2nd Lawson just behind)

Lincsquad was well represented putting a strong team in for the race as they look to move up in the Udo’s choice race series team and solo competitions.

Competitors were set off in 4 waves (pic of wave 1 mass start) at 3 minute intervals with the fastest predicted times going of 1st so the crowd could see who was leading the race throughout. J.Dudley (Leeds/Bradford Tri) was 1st to exit the swim in 9:08 closely followed by Lincsquad lady Lauren York in 3rd with a 9:46 swim, Steve Clark 16th out the water 10:28 followed by Rick Stenton 17th 10:30 and Huwie Davies 19th 11:10, all with work to do to get up towards the front of the race. Sallie Joseph 15:39, Steven Dolby (below exits the water) and Amanda Clements 20:25 competing in only their 1st or 2nd open water triathlon posted solid times.

Onto the windy bike and Steve C posted the 4th fastest bike time of the day with a 30:01 split to move from 16th to 2nd heading into T2 behind new race leader Shaun Lawson from Sheffield Tri, Huwie Davies (below) also moving up from 19th into 17th with a bike of 31:36. Chris Spavin was lying in 60th after swim and showed his strength on the bike 31:49 to move up 30 places in the field. Paul Ralph posted 33:37 40th fastest showing that his strongest discipline is the bike as his training is stepping up as he builds towards the Outlaw. Amanda pulled Sallie back a little on the bike riding the 20km 1 min faster than her Lincsquad team mate. Alberto Legido coming back from injury completed the swim and bike before pulling out of the race. Duncan Wright set the 6th fastest bike time with a 30:25 split

Out of T2 and into the run S.Clark worked hard and got onto the leaders shoulder and sat on him until the first left turn on the run and then attacked him opening up a 5 metre gap to take the lead at the halfway turn 2.5km into the run they were back shoulder to shoulder and Steve attacked him again opening up a 10m gap and held the lead to take the win posting a last mile of 5:35 to come home just over the hour in 1:00:17 to win by 7 seconds!!!!. H.Davies again got stronger and stronger and moved up to finish 15th overall putting more time into Stenton 25th and Spavin 34th. Lauren York again showed she is a force as she posted the fastest junior splits in all 3 disciplines and against all the other Female Juniors. Lauren (below) also just missed out on the podium in the ladies overall as she finished 4th Lady in 1:09:43.

North Lincs Adventure Challenge Results

Sunday the 29th May saw competitors arrive from all over UK to compete in the 10th Annual North Lincs Adventure Challenge. North Lincs Adventure Challenge is an adventure race which is run annually on the bank holiday weekend towards the end of May. There are three disciplines consisting of: a 36 kilometre cycle race on the roads around Brigg, two laps in a canoe or kayak around the Brigg ‘Island’ and a 10K trail run finishing in Brigg Market Place. The day look set to see some rain, however a hellish wind ensured it stayed dry for the most part.

The Race started with the 36 kilometre bike leg with all competitors setting of at 1 minute intervals. Last years winner Steve Clark setting off with the pressure of having the No.1 on his back posted a blistering 52:35, so the race was on. The wind seemed to blow from all directions except from behind!

The kayak leg saw Josh Hook post a brilliant 50:28 followed by newcomer Ian Smith with a blistering 51:23 only beaton by Andy Grimwood who was competing in a team with a 48:04.

On to the run and it was now between Steve Clark and Matt Stephenson for the overall honors. Steve had the advantage and Matt was running like a Steam Train to try and make up lost ground, eventually posting a wicked 38:53. This was not enough to make up the defecit on Senor Clark and Steve took the top spot for the third year in a row missing out on the course record by only a minute.

Peter Chappill and Andy Yeadon received an “Outstanding Achievement Award” for having competed in all 10 of the Adventure Challenge Races.

The days racing was a success and ran smoothly thanks to Andy Veitch who has taken over as Race Director after many great years at the hands of Ken Collier. A big thank you to everyone that helped organise, marshall, registrations, goody bags and support the race. See you next year.

The Brigg Bomber is a quadrathlon, which from its inception has been designed as an international event. It was conceived with the World Middle distance championships in mind, and also as an addition to North Lincs’ Adventure Challenge for those who like a swim. Along with our sister race The North Lincs Adventure Challenge it is one of the BQA’s national trophy rounds.

The race is not for the faint hearted and kicks off from Broughton Bridge with a 1500m open water swim with a transistion to the Kayaks before paddling 8km back up to the Ancholme Liesure Centre. Then it is off on the bike for 40km road TT returning to Brigg for the finale 10km road run.

Lincsquad take Top Honours at Driffield

Driffield

Freebird Events hosted their second sprint event of the year at Driffield yesterday. Despite the unforgiving weather, Lincsquad were once again out in force mixing among the well represented big city clubs like York Tri and Leeds/Bradford. Although punching well above their weight Team Lincsquad I’m sure, will have left a lasting impression on the ‘full to capacity(250)’ field.
Not having a Team Prize to contend for it was left to Steve Clark, Jo Walker and Lauren York to put things beyond doubt and show which team had been putting in some serious early season graft.
Of the many notable performances of the day these three individuals rubber stamped the overall top honours in winning 1st Place Overall Male, 1st Place Overall Female and 1st Place Female youth.
Again Lincsquad and (new sponsor)Falcon Cycles’ Clark showed why he’s the reigning British Quadrathlon Champion. Steve left the pool in 14th place before making good ground on his rivals posting the 5th fastest bike time. The 5k run was done under 20 minutes ensuring a 22 second lead on the second placed athlete giving Steve his second victory of the season.

Not letting Clark and the men grab all the glory duathlon champion Joanne Walker turning to the ‘dark side’ that is triathlon proved she’s no slouch at the three disciplined event either!
Jo finished almost 1.5 minutes in front of her nearest rival and an amazing 17th overall dipping under the magic hour by 10 seconds. Not bad seeing as Jo has only just returned to proper training following a month out due to illness.

Following Jo’s lead, Lauren York showed she’s got a promising future in the world of multisport winning the first female youth trophy. A former national swimmer Lauren set the pace from the off and her 5min 16 second 400m swim was the 4th fastest time of the day, and that includes the seniors! Lauren looked a chip off the old block as her proud Time trial champion dad witnessed her strong riding in such windy conditions from the stands.

When the above three members hit such dizzy heights it’s very easy to forget the part the rest of the Lincsquad competitors play in such an event. The remaining six contingent all had stories to tell with some personal bests among them.

Two other Steves, Grocock (13th) and Lormor (15th) duked it out to the wire with Steve Grocock’s swim and cycle (3rd fastest of the day) giving him just enough of a lead to fend off the ever gaining Lormor. Steve Lormor being another athlete to fall victim to the winter illness was praying for just another 200 metres as the flagging Grocock crossed the line. Both men going under the hour. The older and balder Steve yet again missing out on a trophy by just 25 seconds!

The fortnightly series’ of Duathlons and Timetrials have certainly paid dividends for both Chris Gibbs (44th) and Lincsquad debutant Huwie Davis (26th) A very strong bike leg for Huwie and Chris’ trade mark run being of particular notes for the two. Chris also narrowly missing out on an age group trophy, not helped by the winner of this age group posting the fastest run split beating Clarky by almost 2 minutes!

Paul Ralph (94th) still nursing an Achilles injury had three solid legs (there’s got to be a joke in there somewhere) to keep his Ironman training on track for the year.
Al Curtis (125th) another relative newcomer to the world of tri wasn’t even sure he’d be racing until that morning as an admin error nearly put paid to his race. This didn’t stop Al putting in a  spectacular swim time. It’s amazing how much noise Paul Ralph and Chris Gibbs, normally the quiet men of triathlon can make when showing their support for fellow team mates. I’ve got to include Mark York and all the Lincsquad Wags in this too as their support was tremendous.

The strength and depth of the club is becoming ever more obvious at events such as these where we can compete at the highest level against the big towns and city clubs. Well done all.

Steve Ornsby a workmate (soon to be Lincsquad) times included. This was Steve’s first venture into the world of multisport and with a 6 week crash course on the 3 disciplines did himself proud.

Kirmington Muddy Duathlon

kirmington_york

16 hardy competitors and plenty of supporters turned out on a dry Sunday morning for the Kirmington MUDDY Duathlon.

Although the weather was fine on the day, some heavy rain over the last few days had made the tracks and fields very muddy and slippery.

A short race briefing to confirm route and directions and they were off.

Phil Binch took advantage of the road section and stretched out the field, followed closely by Mark York & Rob Wood, through the woods and the stream, there was nothing in it coming into T1.

Phil was first out of T1 on the mountain bike, but Mark York, Dan Broughton & Rob Wood soon caught him a mile or so later in the first field and pulled away.

Rob Wood recorded the fastest mountain bike section in a time of 41:11, with Lincsquad newcomer Chris Ware recording the second fastest bike section, only 8 seconds behind.

Rob was first into T2, with Mark York & Dan Broughton close behind.

Then disaster, Rob turned left out of transition instead of right, he didnt hear the shouts from his fellow competitors and continued on, repeating the 2 mile run route from earlier, instead of the 1 mile run route around Kirmington.

Mark & Dan ran around the 1 mile route together, wondering who would make the first move, with 300 metres to go, they both went for it and Mark sprinted up the last incline to take the win by just 4 seconds.

About a minute behind was Andrew Lawson on his first Lincsquad off road Duathlon finishing in 3rd place after recording the 5th fastest mountain bike section (only 69 seconds slower than the fastest bike split) and 2nd fastest final run.

Humber Sprint Tri 2010

hatfield_tri

Lincsquad take team prize and title. Sunday 3rd of October saw another great turnout for Lincsquad in the Humber Sprint triathlon.
Lincsquad actually won this event earlier in the year but couldn’t bask in their glory as it was incorrectly awarded to Barracudas.
No such problems this time although Lincsquad had to draft in the on form Steve Clark to make certain as only the top 3 from each team counted towards the prize.

The 9 strong contingent didn’t have it easy when met with atrocious weather conditions and a revamped extension to the bike course to 14.5 mile long. In fact, the course had a few changes in that the swim transition was further than last time but thankfully the run was slightly shorter. Maybe the organizers took pity on us having already extended the bike course?

Somebody who didn’t seem to mind the rain was motorbike racer Dave Hinch who capitalized on the over-cautious riders down the hills to finish just 3 places behind his season long nemesis and good mate Rob Wood. Long may that rivalry continue. Paul Ralph narrowly missed out on a top 50 position after a creditable performance. Paul, pop over and have a chat next time mate as some of us are still looking to put a face to the name.

Amanda Clements certainly knows how to pick her first triathlon, talk about a baptism of fire in those conditions. Still, not to be deterred Amanda put in a great performance before shooting off and missing the team photo, next time Amanda.
Getting the taste from last week’s Brigg Sprint, Becky Bowen and Kate Lancaster couldn’t let this end of season opportunity escape without having one last blast. Whether they secretly rued this decision when looking out of the window at 05:30 that morning who knows? Their high spirits at the end of the race would indicate they made the right decision. Both girls put in some good times and even Kate’s puncture couldn’t dampen her enthusiasm or was that because she won a ‘spot prize that was better than Clarky’s?

Phil Gibbs, following his top ten placing at last weeks Brigg Sprint was a valuable assett towards the Team prize. Phil’s ever impressive running saw him take eleventh spot, rubber stamping the top 3 highest positions.

Lincsquad’s superhero Steve Clark didn’t quite get it his own way this week but not through want of trying. Losing his timing chip in the pool only encouraged the British National Quadrathlon Champion to battle even harder. Despite being almost half a length behind me in the pool he’d eaten into that lead down the 300m run into transition and was out of T1 and onto the bike before me!!!
After yet another strong bike leg from Steve he knew he couldn’t let up on the run with his rivals breathing down his neck. A superb run saw Steve take the second place prize overall and more chocolate muffins to go with the plaudits.

For me, the swim went well but I must remember the run to transition is still part of the race! My bike leg was poor and it didn’t help watching Clarky ride off into the distance when my chain fell off. The run (for me) wasn’t too bad but still nowhere near good enough to challenge the top boys. Must try harder throughout the winter! Second in my age group was nice though. I don’t think my chain falling off would have had any bearing on that result anyway. My 7th along with Phil’s 11th and Steve’s 2nd was enough to hold off competition from Barracudas and the well supported Racing TNT team.

Steve Grocock Becomes an IRONMAN in Austria

Steve Grocock - IronMan Austria

Well, for almost a year now I’ve been training for my first Ironman and the day of reckoning had finally arrived.

The training (which I thank the Lincsquad members for) was done and although you always feel you need to do more I was glad for the couple of days respite before the race. Training along with pasta was becoming a little tedious. Four of us from my work (and two more locals) had travelled with Nirvana to the scenic lakeside resort of Klagenfurt.

Austria, as expected was a place of beauty and the whole Ironman vibe didn’t disappoint. I’d recommend Nirvana too, sure, they’re not cheap but they do take a lot of the pressure of you so you can focus on the 140.6 miles. We racked the bikes and 3 different transition bags in transition the day before but still had the opportunity to pump up the tubs and add all the extra gear I’d forgotten from the previous day before the race started.

The cannon fired the start of the 2.4 mile swim as the 2500 swimmers fought for clear water in the beautiful turquoise lake. Despite its postcard appearance the lake was soon host to a mass, no holds barred, washing machine scramble. The swim, on this occasion wasn’t to my liking. I’ve done a few open water swims before but had never experienced this amount of people in a mass start before. The lake actually funnels into a canal for the last 850m and here you were at the mercy of the swimmers in front, I just couldn’t get past them! By the time I exited the water I was down almost 5 minutes on my predicted swim time. Swim time…1-01- 37 secs …………3-4 mins behind schedule!!

Position at this time of race….34th out of 554 males in my age group…223rd overall.

Transition 1 was a bit of a belt and braces job as I shoe-horned out of my wet-suit before putting on cycling shirt, socks, suntan cream, talc, Vaseline, energy gel belt, a spare tub, tub gel…..I think I took ‘being comfortable for the ride’ to the extreme. T1 was slow at 8 minutes considering the winner’s combined transitions were less than 5 minutes.

The 112 mile bike ride (2 laps) was always going to be the making or breaking of any hope of a decent time. The scenery was straight from the Von-Trapps photo album and I really did feel privileged to be a part of it. There were two big hills per lap, the second, the Rupertberg was quite a climb but more so the second time around when I knew what to expect. This said, the course was still fast, due mainly to its smooth roads and the fact you didn’t have to worry about oncoming traffic as the roads were shut to the public. The long rides in training had paid off for me as I didn’t really suffer at any point and I was enjoying the fact I’d got almost 30 minutes under my predicted time of 05:30. Energy gels every half an hour along with bananas and flap-jacks kept me fuelled enough to ride at a decent pace whilst avoiding meltdown. Strong winds and heavy rain came for my last 10 mile making conditions a little hairy. If I ever do another Ironman I’ll remember not to get too carried away with the nutrition side of things. I had 2 x 750mls of water stowed in my bottle holders for the duration which I didn’t drink as I just grabbed it at aid stations and re-filled my front bottle holder. I had a cheese & ham bun, mini cheddars, a whole pack of jelly beans, peanuts, 2 X energy bars and 3 gels still in my possession at the end. All that extra weight!!! Like I said, I got a bit carried away!!!

Predicted time 5:30…actual time 5:02 ish Position at this time of race….41st out of 554 males in my age group…284th overall.

Transition 2 was also slow at 07:35 but I was pleased I’d packed a spare pair of running socks as my bike socks were sodden.

The marathon run has given me nightmares leading up to the Ironman. Running (and transitions) are definitely my weakest disciplines and the aches and pains I’d get when attempting brick sessions were a concern. I have to say the pain wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I’d expected as I actually ran a 7:38 for my first mile out of transition. The rain had now stopped and the temperature was nearing 30 degrees so the wet sponges (I’d always wondered what these were for in races in the UK) were a god send. Inevitably my mile splits slowed to 8 and then 9 minute miles. I seemed to get passed by everyone including the race leaders who were on their final lap.

A couple of toilet breaks were necessary on the run due to the amount of fluid I’d been drinking but apart from that I didn’t really stop on the run and although I was almost going at a snail’s pace I did start to pick a few people off toward the end mainly people were having major problems, Bella Bayliss being one of these. It looked at one point that I’d go sub 4 hrs when towards the end I put in a few 8.5 min/miles. My calves were killing but I knew I was within touching distance of the finish so I didn’t need to nurse them home. I was slightly demoralized when my Garmin bleeped at 26 miles and the finish line still seemed a long way off. I thought I’d gone sub 4 hrs but it wasn’t until my Garmin indicated 27.6 miles did I run under the timing clock. I must have cocked it up and not reset it properly before I set off!!! It’s not a very nice feeling though when you think you’ve done and you have to do another mile and half!! Needless to say the sub 4hrs was never really on!!!

Predicted time 4:15 hrs…..actual time 4:04 something. Position at end of race….76th out of 554 males in my age group…397th overall.

Finishing time 10:24:04 As soon as I finished I was handed my medal and was escorted into the finishing enclosure by a lady marshal. She didn’t believe me when I kept telling her I was ok, maybe my drunken stumbling was giving me away.

There was no time to reflect and get emotional as I headed to the beer tent and ordered a pint. I’d visualized this moment a hundred times during training…..How I’d grin to myself as I reflected on the race that has taken a year’s worth of training to achieve……how the cold lager would slip down! It wasn’t how I’d imagined!! I felt terrible I had to lay down quick. I found a little spot on my own outside and adopted the fetal position whilst feeling sorry for myself. I lay there for half an hour before going back inside to join a mate who was greedily tucking into some pizza. I forced some soup down and as if by magic I perked up. 4 bowls in total had me back in the land of the living as we spent another 5 hours watching the rest of the competitors crossing the line. Only then could I enjoy that pint.

The whole occasion was brilliant and something I’ll look back on with fond memories, even a sense of pride. Yes there were times when I was struggling but no more so than in other races when you’ve pushed yourself. Will I do another? Yes, probably, but I need a year off at least to catch up on jobs I’ve been putting off first. Good luck to you guys doing the Outlaw in a couple of weeks I hope you put enough into your race you can be proud of your time but more importantly try to enjoy it,  All the best Steve Grocock
