Slaidburn Weekend

Slaidburn Weekend
Rocky Roads ahead

Last weekend saw both Paul Carvill, Andy Veitch and Martin Seaton head off up to Slaidburn (Near Clitheroe) to join Paul C's old club Buxton CC for a weekend of cycling in them there hills!!

Arriving on Friday evening at the Hark and Bounty pub after fighting our way through Bradfords Friday evening rush hour we soon made our way to the bar and took some much need refreshments. By 8pm everyone else had arrived and we settled down for the evening meal which in the Hark and Bounty was 'Fish Night'  so Paul and Andy had Steak!! The Hark and Bounty was packed with locals either staying for a meal or just taking a takeout. Everyone headed off to bed at a sensible hour in readiness for Saturdays hilly ride...

Saturday morning arrived and everyone was up early and down for breakfast, only to be greeted by Peter known by his colleagues as 'Victor' and it soon became apparent why!!! Miserable is not a good enough word!! Eventually we all headed out of Slaidburn with a full breakfast sloshing back and forth and Paul and Andy were not alone in fighting to keep it down up the first major climb.

Paul C soon realised he was overgeared and realised he would be spending much of the weekend groveling out of the saddle in a sort of zig zag fashion (not pretty). At least the weather was dry and most of the time sunny. Nearing the cafe point at Kirby Lonsdale, Paul C was now swinging off the back and decided to head back to Hornby to a nearer cafe, Andy V joined him to keep an eye on him. They headed out after the cafe stop back up into the hills on to a climb from Bentham to Slaidburn (Lythe Fell Road) that went on forever and had Carvill out of his seat for most of it. The rest of the crew caught them on the climb headed up by Laurie who has spent the last two years with the British Talent Team so made them look like proper rookies. They were pleased to find out they had only cut the ride by a few miles and did not feel so bad that evening.

At the Hark and Bounty, Carvill decided he could not face another day on them there hills and promptly kicked hell out of the Kronenburg. The next morning however Andy V and Martin S managed to persuade him to get out of the pit and on his bike. He even had more play in the bottom bracket than Jordan...(enough said). So again after a lovely reception from Victor at breakfast (most people opting for a lighter bite) headed out once again, this time with the rain falling. Once again the route went up and down as much as it did left and right, Carvill was soon swinging off the back with some early morning efforts courtesy of the Kronenburg.

It was then that the route headed off over what can only be described as a 'rock road' (pictured above) for some interesting riding styles. At the end nobody had suffered a puncture, which Carvill pointed out and as if by magic James tyre went bang. This was not to be the first delay and the next puncture had by Miles was to see the group split with Nick Sharpe, Miles and Martin take a direct route to the cafe, conveniently missing out the 1 in 4 climb that had the rest gurning for Britain.

Everyone eventually regrouped at the cafe and tucked into some serious grub, only to see the weather deteriate even further. Heading out of the cafe the heat soon disappeared and a silent group pressed on with the short and sharp route in mind. Sharp was an understatement!! Carvill and Veitch been the last to get back to the pub, thank heavens they had lights. What a weekend and they would not have missed it for the world.... til next year!
